Image of the A. Schwab storefront at 163 Beale St. after the march that turned into a riot, March 28, 1968. The march was intended to be a peaceful, non violent event and devolved when marchers reached Beale St. where windows became broken and looting began.
The Sanitation Workers' Strike of 1968 was the beginning of the Poor People's Movement and brought Dr. King to Memphis to advocate on behalf of Memphis Sanitation workers seeking better working conditions, union recognition, dues check off, and equal treatment in the work place.
