Description
The Harahan Bridge, named in honor of the former Illinois Central Railroad executive James Theodore Harahan, is a cantilevered through truss bridge that carried two rail lines across the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee. The bridge was owned an operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. In addition to the two rail lines the bridge was built with roadways on the sides of the main structure to support vehicular traffic. On July 14, 1916 the bridge opened its lines for service. The Harahan bridge remained in service from 1916-1949 when the new Memphis & Arkansas Bridge opened.
